Not Every Channel Gets the Same You

Here’s a trick built into half the radios sitting in men’s closets right now, and almost nobody sets it up.

Most guys pick one frequency and just talk on it — transmit and listen, same channel, every word. Simple. Also the easiest thing in the world to follow, because if anybody finds your frequency, they get the whole conversation. Both sides. Everything.

But a dual-band radio can transmit on one band and listen on a completely different one at the same time. You talk on VHF, listen on UHF. Your buddy does the reverse. You hear each other perfectly. But anybody scanning a single band — which is almost everybody — only ever gets half a conversation. One voice, talking into what sounds like silence. It doesn’t even read as a conversation.

You haven’t hidden anything. You’ve just stopped handing the whole thing to whoever happens to be listening.

I think men used to understand that about themselves, and we’ve mostly forgotten it. The age we’re in tells you the healthy move is one open channel — transmit everything, to everyone, all the time. Post it. Say it out loud. If you’re not broadcasting the whole conversation, something’s wrong with you — you’re hiding, you’re being fake, you’re “not living authentically.” So men key up on one band for the whole world and wonder why they feel picked apart by the end of most days.

That’s not honesty. That’s just a man with no comms discipline.

A wife gets a different frequency than a stranger on the internet. A brother gets a different one than a coworker. Not because you’re two different men — because a signal split across every receiver in range isn’t strength, it’s just noise, and noise is easy to ignore and easy to exploit. The men we actually respect were never the loudest ones on every channel. They were the ones you knew would tell you the truth on your channel, the one you’d actually earned.

This isn’t new. Every radio operator in the last World War had a phrase drilled into him before he ever kissed his wife goodbye: loose lips sink ships. Not because talking was evil. Because a man who can’t tell the difference between his general audience and his real one gets people killed. The discipline wasn’t secrecy for its own sake. It was knowing exactly who was on the net with him.

I learned a smaller version of that on an actual net, years ago — keying up only when I had something the net actually needed, and getting quietly corrected the one time I didn’t. It stuck harder than almost anything else from that season. Not every thought earns airtime. Not everyone gets the whole signal.

So here’s the real question this week:

Who actually gets your full band — and who’s just been scanning you for free?
